Abstract

Significance. Mistakes in first aid and psychological support training reduce chances of the victims to maintain physical and psychological health. Analysis of the most common mistakes will help to improve effectiveness of the first aid and quality of training in this area.

Purpose. To analyze mistakes in first aid and psychological support training exemplified by the all-Russia competition “Human Factor”, 2016 – 2018.

Methods. 112 “Training” task cards for referee’s evaluation (including 56 on psychological support and 56 on first aid) of the teams participating in the final round of the competition “Human Factor” in 2016–2018 have been analyzed. The age of the team members varied from 16 to 26. The obtained data were statistically processed by calculating the relative frequency of every mistake and their further ranking.

Results. The analysis helped to classify most common mistakes in psychological support and first aid training. The classification includes the following four groups: 1) substantive mistakes, i.e. mistakes associated with basic theoretical knowledge; 2) practical mistakes, i.e. mistakes in first aid technique demonstration; 3) trainer’s mistakes i.e. training mistakes; and 4) reflective mistakes, i.e. feedback mistakes made by an instructor in respect of a trainee during the training.

The paper also contains recommendations to minimize the above-mentioned mistakes to improve quality of instructors’ training in first aid, and effectiveness of their further training of the population.

Scope of application. The results may be used by trainers who train instructors in first aid and psychological support to decrease mistakes, improve quality of their training and effectiveness of further training of the population.

Keywords: first aid; psychological support; training of the population in first aid; mistakes in first aid training.
