New organizational schemes of providing medical care to patients with benign hyperplasia of the prostate gland Print

Summary. Benign hyperplasia of the prostate gland is a pathology which is rather important from medical, social, and economic points of view. Specifically, it leads to a diminished quality of life of these patients. It is the most prevalent urology disease among elderly males. For all these, benign hyperplasia of the prostate gland is generally considered to be one of first-ranking medical and social problems.

An organizational experiment was staged in an inpatients facility to test an innovative scheme for a nurse to function in a new role in the care for patients with benign hyperplasia of the prostate gland. The aim of this study was to evaluate results of this experiment.

For the experiment, a nurse was selected to take up nursing modified as specialty higher education - to become the determining center in the job of medium-level nursing personnel. This nurses unit would take the liability for three clusters of medical care measures: organization and diagnosis; therapy and prevention; evaluation of nursing results. Sociologic survey through opinion poll was conducted among nurses to assess their sense of satisfaction with this new scheme of their work. Physicians were interviewed to evaluate feasibility and efficiency of the new scheme.

Hundred percent nurses’ satisfaction was verified in this study, while physicians generally confirmed feasibility and efficiency. Economic effect and medical social efficiency of the introduced new scheme of nurse business were specified in this study. Economic efficiency of the expenses on invested ruble was estimated as 28.3 rubles. Surgical intention increased from the normal values on 125 subjects during the experiment - to involve 80.8% of the patients admitted on this motive to the hospital. As a result of this change, the mean bed stay increased from 26.5 days to 28.8 days, that is by 8.7%. Conclusion: the experiment with modified scheme of nurse business proved valuable.
