Abstract. The article presents results of the study that used modern approaches to define health losses. Assessment of medico-demographic losses due to deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease among the population of Krasnoyarsk city for the period of 2002-2010 was implemented with the use of DALY method. Mortality and population size databases of the Krasnoyarsk Territorial office of state statistics were used as a source of information for estimation of DALY index.

Gender differences in DALY indexes from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are identified in all age groups with the prevalence of losses among male population. Among men, the losses due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in different age groups more than double losses among female population. The greatest differences in the rate of DALYs between male and female population are observed in 2003 and 2010 –4.7 times. There are substantial differences between male and female population not only in the magnitude of the relative losses of DALYs, but in age losses as well. The highest difference of DALY value among male and female population is observed for 45-49 age group. The highest absolute DALY values for the considered period were observed for 70-74 age group both for men and women. The maximum of relative losses are observed in the interval of 80-84 years. This is due to the fact that the population of 80-84 age group is much smaller than the population of 70-74 age group (for men the population size is declining 4.3 times, for women – 2.5 times).

From 2002 to 2010 due to mortality from chronic obstructive lung disease in Krasnoyarsk, 5319 DALY was lost in absolute numbers: among male population the share of losses is 71 % (3794 DALY), and 29 % (1525 DALY) among women.

Key words: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; DALY method; mortality; medico-demographic losses.
