Ivanov S.V. Abstract. Background. The elderly and senile patients suffering from vision disorders need social and labour rehabilitation for maximal adaptation to new life conditions due to loss of vital functions and natural consequences of aging. Thus, study of social rehabilitation and development of approaches to ensure safety of care for the elderly seems rather prospective. The Purpose of the work was to substantiate, develop and implement approaches to ensure safe care, statistical with calculating average values and determining statistical significance of study results using Student’s coefficient. Results. The author suggested approaches to ensure safe care delivery to the elderly and senile patients at ophthalmology delivery to the elderly and senile patients at ophthalmology departments. Methods: monographic, analytical departments. The developed approaches were grouped in the following three modules: - optimizing implementation of medical technologies (provision of ophthalmic care according to the existing standards and quality control; conducting special geriatric checkups for detection and prevention of geriatric syndromes); - creating safe barrier-free environment (removing barriers, thresholds, etc.), moving support (handrails, technical means, staff escort), and providing imaging information for the vision-impaired patients); - training (training of doctors in gerontology and geriatrics; training of nurses in gerontology and geriatrics; training of paramedical personnel in basics of work with the elderly; training of patients and their relatives). Implementation of the developed approaches improved performance indicators of the ophthalmology department in terms of safe care delivery to the elderly and senile patients during their stay. Conclusions. Implementation of the approaches to ensure safe care delivery to the elderly and senile patients at ophthalmology departments should become an integral component of the model for improving quality of care and patients’ satisfaction. Scope of application. The obtained data can be used in routine work of heads of health organizations as well as in advanced training of general practitioners in care delivery to the elderly and senile patients with ophthalmic pathology. Keywords: safety; ophthalmic care; elderly and senile patients; health care.
