Abstract: In modern context, innovative activity of a business entity is an important factor of economic growth; innovative activity becomes one of the most significant domains of social and economic development. In this regard, the role of inter-organizational cooperation between all participants of the innovation system only increases. This trend is also true to the healthcare system that needs new approaches to its innovative development. A wide range of changes in organization and management activities is required, that envisages active innovative communication between medical organizations.

Therefore, use of the network approach seems promising to manage innovation-oriented development of health organizations, which was the subject of the study.

The purpose of this study was to define the essence of innovation networks and identify their specific characteristics related to healthcare. The author used methods of scientific abstraction, analysis and synthesis, generalization and analogy.

Conclusions: the innovation network is a broader concept compared to cluster; it is a combination of sustainable contacts between enterprises and organizations engaged in innovative activities (development, manufacture and commercialization of innovation and/or innovative services), government bodies and authorities, as well as representatives of the innovation infrastructure. Specific characteristics of the health care network include active participation of the Government authorities, lack of territorial concentration and availability of coordination.

Scope of application: Conclusions can be taken into account to elaborate and implement decisions aimed at further developing medical organizations and healthcare in general.

Keywords: Innovation networks; innovation-oriented development of healthcare.
