Summary. Diabetes is a serious disease with numerous
complications, causing early disability and premature death. Over the
past 20 years, the number of diabetic patients in Russia has been on the
rise. From the beginning of this century and up to 2011 there was a
steady decline in mortality from diabetes followed by an increase.
In order to determine the cause of the changes in diabetic mortality
trends we compared age structure of mortality from diabetes mellitus in
Russia and in Europe. Beside, we analyzed peculiar features of mortality
dynamics across different age groups and compared trends in mortality
from specific cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus.
The analysis showed that the change in the downward trend in the
Russian mortality from diabetes mellitus was due to more correct
registration of death causes. In particular, the proportion of cases
that could have been considered as death from stroke and coronary heart
disease under the old coding practice were registered as death from
diabetes in 2012. However, a smaller part of diabetes deaths among the
elderly are currently been recorded with the bigger one remaining
undetected.
A true increase in mortality is observed among the elderly population
due to increased life expectancy of people with diabetes. The Russian
mortality from diabetes mellitus is expected to grow in future due to a
more correct registration of the underlying death causes
Keywords: mortality from diabetes mellitus;
relationship of mortality from diabetes and cardiovascular disease;
correct choice of underlying death cause; age structure of mortality
from diabetes mellitus; change in mortality trend.
